Compound Unlimited Flights

Can someone tell me how this works? Are you always in the same flight? Is it on scores for the rounds? I just don't know how it works...

Thanks

Sounds like you're talking about one of the Vegas divisions.....?

Flights are basically groupings of archers/peers having similar scores. If talking the Vegas tournament for example, oftentimes the groups/flights are set up after the first 2 days' scores. Usually somewhere around 30-33 archers per flight. In other words, all scores are ranked in order after the 1st 2 days, first 32 are Flight 1, next 32 are Flight 2, etc., etc.. After the conclusion then of the 3rd day your total 3 day score would only be compared to the other archers in your Flight. For example, Vegas possible is 300/day, 600 after 2 days. Top scores even in the Flights Divisions will be in the 600 neighborhood. Say you shot 290 each day for a total 580 after 2 days. When the Flights are set after the 2 days' scores you will no longer be competing against the guys/gals at the top with their 600's. Rather, you will be competing the 3rd day against those who shot scores in the same 580 neighborhood as yourself. Which end of the Flight you're in, top or bottom of the 32 or so other competitors, will randomly depend on where the score breakouts for each Flight start/stop. Awards are then paid out in each Flight (8 places or so) so you don't have to be the best of all the Flights competitor's, just one of the top 8 in your individual Flight, to possibly get a little $ back.

Most years anyways, I've seen Vegas designate the Flights after the conclusion of the first 2 days' scores. However, Vegas does, I believe, reserve the right to vary how they set the Flight breakouts each year. For example, the Flights could be designated after the conclusion of all 3 days' scores (in other words, after all 3 days total scores are ranked and first 32 are Flight 1, next 32 are Flight 2, etc., etc.) instead of being set after the first 2 days. I believe Vegas reserves the right to vary how Flights are established in order to stem possible "sandbagging", where someone may intentionally shoot a couple low scores the first 2 days to get into a lower Flight and then shoot lights out the last day to win whatever Flight they were shooting in.

Flights differs from the Championship Division. In the Championship Division everyone is ranked solely on their 3 day total score -- if you don't finish in the top 40 or thereabouts (i.e. can't drop maybe more than 1 point for all 3 days to finish in the top 40) you have no chance of winning anything.

Other NFAA tournaments (i.e. Indoor Nationals) also use Flights when the number of competitors exceeds a prescribed number. Similar format as Vegas where scores are usually ranked after a pre-determined number of days (i.e. Indoor Natls, after the first day) and then number of archers per Flight and number of Flights are set using a formula. You compete and are ranked then within your Flight after the tournament is completed for awards.

Hope this helps explain better...........
